Sutherland Estate has one of the most spectacular vineyard sites in Australia. On high ground at the southern edge of the Great Divide, the cathedral-ceilinged cellar door and large outside deck command impressive views down the Yarra Valley and far into the distance. Birdsong fills the air, and the highway seems far away. The original planting in 1995 was to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. Further plantings in 2000 increased the area of these four varieties and added Gewürztraminer and Tempranillo. Most of the vineyard is sited on a free draining slope. The slope falls toward the south, which, together with the 200 metre elevation, accentuates the cool nature of the vineyard. The meso climate of our site provides a longer than usual ripening season, which, in turn, produces wines of varietal intensity, elegance and complexity. Of particular interest are our plantings of Gewürztraminer and Tempranillo. We are one of the few vineyards in the Yarra Valley to have either. The small 2/3 acre of Gewürztraminer sits nestled into the hill in our coolest corner of the vineyard. Each year it produces picture perfect, spicy, balanced fruit. The Tempranillo sits in a warmer, more exposed location, and produces generous, richly textured fruit.
